Hear and Say are hearing loss and speech development experts.

School Screening

School classrooms can be both a busy and particularly noisy environment, especially for children experiencing hearing loss. This can have a significant impact on a child’s ability to learn and may lead to speech and language delays, educational difficulties, behavioural problems and often the need for increased support.

Just like you, we don’t want hearing loss to interfere with a child’s education, so we partner with schools to provide vital hearing screening to ensure your students are hearing optimally.

Hear to Learn

Our mobile team of experts provides hearing screening to schools across Queensland, through our Hear to Learn program, empowering children to optimise their education now and into the future. This best-practice clinical screening program is recommended for all prep and primary school aged children.

The cost effective and inclusive screening program can:

  • Screen up to 90 children a day
  • Provide detailed reports for parents and schools quickly
  • Follow up with parents to assist them to navigate referral pathways

Our three-stage hearing screening includes otoscopy, tympanometry and pure tone audiometry, with clinical oversight by our expert paediatric audiologists.

Otoscopy: Examination of the ear canal and ear drum for both ears.

Tympanometry: Testing of the function of the middle ear.

Pure tone audiometry: Hearing test for both ears under headphones. It provides information on a person’s ability to hear sounds important for speech.

Up to 25% of students are found to have a hearing issue on the day of screening. If we do find anything that requires further investigation, we will contact families to explain what we found and the next steps.
